About:
I'm natalie. I'm seventeen and I'm a:
vegetarian/intersectional feminist/INFJ/liberal/Ravenclaw/atheist, so if you can't jive with that then this probably isn't the place for you.
This is a personal blog, which means I post a lot of selfies and read mores. I also post triggering stuff quite often-it's always appropriately tagged & marked, but please be safe!

I've already spent a lot of time talking about myself here, so humor me and go read it (esp. before asking me a question!).

Ask box here!
ngl I'm really shitty about responding to asks, especially ~complimentary~ ones (oh my god I feel like such an ass saying that), but if you ask a question I'll do my best to get back to you asap xx

the problem with claiming I’m a vegetarian is that I hate like 75% of all vegetables

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Another day, another appalling undercover investigation from the Humane Society of the United States: The animal advocacy group has released evidence — and video footage — of pig abuse at a factory farm that allegedly is a supplier to Tyson Foods.

Video shot in April at the Wyoming Premium Farms facility in Wheatland shows workers kicking living piglets like soccer balls; swinging sick piglets in circles by their hind legs; striking mother pigs with their fists; and repeatedly and forcefully kicking them as they resisted leaving their young.

A Tyson Foods spokesman denies the company buys directly from the farm:

Tyson Foods does not buy any of the hogs raised on this farm for our pork processing plants. … A company that we own has purchased hogs from the farm. We will not purchase from this farm until we’ve had a chance to investigate.

(Heads up — video contains graphic images of animal abuse.)

GOD.

I will never understand why people who eat meat for no other reason than because “they like it” still do so.

I’d like to point out to the tagger and/or above commenter that there ARE humane ways to sell and buy meat products and to raise animals to be used for meat.  It’s just that suppliers to large companies such as Tyson and Oscar Meyer tend to not be very humane in their treatment.  This tends to be because it’s more expensive to treat the animals well than it is to abuse them as such.  I’m in no way defending this farm’s employees’ behavior, I’m just pointing out that there are ways to consume meat that don’t make animals go through this sort of treatment.  So it’s a bit silly to make a statement like that, assuming that everyone eats meat from companies such as Tyson that get their meat from places like this one.

unless you’ve bought meat specifically from a small farm owner or a market that clearly states they’re supplied solely by a private farm, it’s nearly impossible to avoid this kind of meat, actually. There are literally only a handful of humane animal farms left, and out of those it’s even more difficult to find one that not only raises the animals humanely, but also has them slaughtered in the same fashion.
Unless you’re absolutely 100% certain that the meat you’re eating was raised and killed humanely, it probably wasn’t.

And let’s be frank here, most people don’t give a shit either way.

Okay wow yes I am a vegetarian

That does not mean I care about how you couldn’t live without meat.
That does not mean I want to hear about the time you tried to go vegetarian but then bacon.
That does not mean I want you to demand a complete comprehensive guide on what I do eat.
That does not mean I want you to insist that I must have eaten meat at some point in my life (and thus am not a real vegetarian…?)
It doesn’t mean I want you to tell me I’m not getting enough protein.
It doesn’t mean I want you to tell me all about how much I’m missing.

It just means no thanks I don’t want a bite of your chili cheese fries.

Reblog if you are a vegetarian.

Had to do it.

this makes me so fucking happy. Unless you’re predisposed to protein deficiency, you’d have to be eating nothing but white bread and american cheese to truly not be getting enough protein on a vegetarian diet. I eat like shit and I still get enough protein.

ugh, my brother gets this shit ALL THE TIME. He’s a baseball player, and he’s always been pretty lanky (something he gets from my grandpa, who’s not a vegetarian.) He’s got like an 8-pack, but because he’s not as bulky as his friends he’s constantly getting shit for not eating meat. So irritating.

Applied to meat, eggs, dairy, and every now and then even fish, the free-range label is bullshit. It should provide no more peace of mind than “all-natural”, “fresh”, or “magical”.
To be considered free-range, chickens raised for meat must have “access to the outdoors”, which, if you take those words literally, mean nothing. (Imagine a shed containing thirty thousand chickens, with a small door at one end that opens to a five-by-five dirt patch-and the door is closed all but occasionally.)

The USDA doesn’t even have a definition of free-range for laying hens and instead relies on producer testimonials to support the accuracy of these claims. Very often, the eggs of factory farmed chickens—chickens packed against one another in vast barren barns—are labeled free range. (“Cage-free” is regulated but means no more or less than what it says-they are literally not in cages.) One can reliably assume that most “free-range” (or “cage-free”) laying hens are debeaked, drugged, and cruelly slaughtered once “spent”. I could keep a flock of hens under my sink and call them free-range.

Jonathan Safran Foer, in Eating Animals

most people don’t understand how under regulated these things are. Especially “kosher” meats

One of my favorite bullshit claims is all-natural. People think that actually means something.

They could be making chocolate bars out of wood pulp and horse shit and still call it all-natural.

also I love that book everyone go read it nao.

I hate when people “go veg” for two weeks, eat nothing but shit, and then claim that they went vegetarian and almost died.

It’s one thing if your body genuinely cannot function on a vegetarian diet, but when all you ate for the entire two weeks was velveeta & salsa on chips, what did you expect to happen?
