“In 1979, when the minimum wage was $2.90, a hard-working student with a minimum-wage job could earn enough in one day (8.44 hours) to pay for one academic credit hour. If a standard course load for one semester consisted of maybe 12 credit hours, the semester’s tuition could be covered by just over two weeks of full-time minimum wage work—or a month of part-time work. A summer spent scooping ice cream or flipping burgers could pay for an MSU education. The cost of an MSU credit hour has multiplied since 1979. So has the federal minimum wage. But today, it takes 60 hours of minimum-wage work to pay off a single credit hour, which was priced at $428.75 for the fall semester.”The Myth of Working Your Way Through College - Svati Kirsten Narula - The Atlantic (via infoneer-pulse)

Ferguson protesters gather for highway shutdown.

Part 2

I feel such an urge to travel to Ferguson and lend help. How I wish I could arrange that. We are needed. This is the real shit.

when i was younger learning about the movements, i thought each time looked like everyone involved across the everywhere. now i see movements happen right while we are going about our everyday. movements happen while we are sleeping and taking a shower, while we are driving to work and kissing our family. but they do not happen when we are all doing those things.

Great points! I will only add that I don’t say this as some sort of anxious youngster. I was arrested in the USA’s first mass arrests, in 2003, dubbed one of the RNC 1800, sat in oily pens and the Tombs for days. I still get hassled crossing the border for it, and suffered nerve damage from the zip cuffs. I also covered the RNC1800 and was surrounded by charging cops, rolling tank vehicles and choppers. I know full well what it means to put your body on the line. I don’t think one needs to be at protests to be active and agree fully that it’s about how we live.

But I meant it: this is the real shit. It’s very important what’s happening right now. I’ve lived long enough to know when history is unfolding. I am a warrior, and welcome the struggle. When we see this kind of injustice, and resistance, we must be prepared to act.

CULTURAL GENOCIDE:  Before and After photo of a young Cree boy, forced to attend a Canadian “Indian school.” (1910)

Despicable.

I want to show this to white people who say that cultural appropriation isn’t a big deal because you’re taking a part of someone’s culture that was insulted, attacked and taken away from them for years and years and now you want to wear it as some sort of costume or fashion trend. But your ancestors were the ones to forcefully take away and obliterate OUR cultures for centuries. We STILL aren’t allowed to freely embrace our cultures because white people love to insult us and make fun of us, but white people themselves love wearing it because they think their mayo asses are entitlted to everything. Nope fuck off.
